How
the Chicago Harvest Moon Ball Competition Came To Be:
(Excerpted from the program book of the
2000 Chicago Harvest Boon Championships)
In the Spring of 1963, Ronald and Polly Dodd [presented the Chicago All American Trophy Ball at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago's famous north side ballroom for many years. Alex Moore, highly recognized authority on ballroom dancing throughout the world, was chairman the board of adjudicators, having just completed his examination tour at the Dodd studio.
Andrew Karzas, owner of the Aragon Ballroom was so impressed with the event, he informed the Dodds that the Chicago Sun Times, who had always presented the Chicago Harvest Moon Ball, were going to give it up. He Advised then to seek the authority to continue the Event. It was Polly Dodd who made an appointment with the Chicago Sun Times and sought to continue the "Chicago Harvest Moon Ball and Competition".
It was formally registered in
the State of Illinois, and presented as "The Chicago Harvest Moon Ball and
Competition" in the fall of 1963.
The format of the competition was brought in line with that which is used
throughout the world, by Ron Dodd, who had been a mid-land's
amateur champion in England.
The inspiration for the competition always was for the furtherance of beautiful dancing, with special recognition given to the amateurs who are the heart of the competitions. Canadian amateurs who were highly developed in the International Style of Dance always contributed to the beauty and excitement of the event..
The "Chicago Harvest Moon Ball and Competition" achieved National Championship Status in three years and continued until 1987 when Polly Dodd, with assistance from Jay Jarquin and Greg Gale presented it on October 2nd and 3rd of that year. At that time Polly Dodd gave it over to Jay Jarquin. The event has continued to be a special autumn competition, and we are grateful for your support throughout the last 37 years.
To all of you who have contributed to the success of "The Chicago Harvest Moon Ball and Competition" we express sincere gratitude.
